“Whatever your story, I can relate. I understand you want the best education for your child(ren) and you have to trust others to help you provide it. I can be trusted to continue to raise the volume on all of our educational issues.” -School Board President Jamela Smith-Folds
Turning up the volume on your concerns.
As your school board trustee, I will continue to set positive direction, provide internal and external site support, ensure whole district accountability, secure effective and efficient infrastructures, and be the leader that is an advocate for students, parents, teachers, and the community.
Demonstrated Listening Skills
As board trustee, I will continue to listen. I understand that people have a need to express their joys and pain before they are able move to resolution. I have an unyielding desire to listen to teachers, students, and parents/guardians. I will continue to actively listen to your experiences; by continuing to have town hall meetings, doing site visits, meeting with community groups, hosting and co hosting listening sessions, and ensuring that many district meetings are opened to the community.
Demonstrated Willingness to Learn, Unlearn, and Relearn
Because I listened, I have learned what experiences our teachers, students, and parents/guardians are having within the district. The experiences people are having, rather it is positive or negative, has value. As a school board trustee, I have learned and grown from hearing your experiences and the experiences of your student(s). Your experience teaches and informs me. From meeting with high school students at Pinole, DeAnza, Richmond, Kennedy, Hercules, and Greenwood to seeking education around district departments, I will continue to learn and unlearn what is needed in our district.
Demonstrated Leadership
After listening and learning, I lead. I will take your concerns and your needs to the school board. I will ensure that Area 1 is heard. I will replicate the good and the eliminate bad. Policy drives practice. I will work for policies and practices that serves the students, parents, and teachers of Area 1. It’s my willingness to find consensus and work from the zone of mediations that will move our Area 1 and the entire district forward.
